Klapp-Online | Help
The simple search is carried out simultaneously based on
- key words in the title
- key words in the review article
- key words in the title note
- author
- editor
- subjects and authors covered
The search is simple for users. The search terms entered are automatically searched for comprehensively in the database using a range of methods. The search extends beyond common data categories such as "title", "subject" and "author" indexes. The "notes", which contain important information and remarks on the indexed documents, are also searched.
In this part you can specify search terms by entering them in the search fields. For every line you can select an index (all fields, title, author, subject and authors covered) and give search terms.
Diacritical marks such as acute or grave accents, carons, cedillas, diaresis, circumflex accents etc. do not need to be entered:
| Special characters | Simplified input |
| Á á À à Â â | A a |
| Č č Ç ç | C c |
| Ł ł | L l |
Optionally, the search can be limited to authors and topics.
If the search query yields too many hits the query needs to be optimised or refined, e.g. by entering further words.Full title information shows all the details of a title entry in category format:
- Author: One or more authors, linked to direct author-based search in Klapp-Online.
- Editor
- Article from omnibus volume: The start of the omnibus title is shown and a link to the full title of the omnibus is given.
- Notes: These include the works/authors referred to, provide information on special prefaces and outline the content (interviews, many authors). This is especially the case if the title itself is not particularly revealing.
- Review: The title of the reviewed work is normally shortened. 'Show all versions' shows a link to the full, unabridged title entry as well as a link to display the title plus any reviews.
- Omnibus: A link to show the omnibus volume with all processed articles is provided.
- Classification: The position, where title is allocated within the classification, is linked to a search based on titles with the same classification in Klapp-Online.
- Subjects and authors covered: One or more items from the subject index. The terms are linked, facilitating convenient searches based on the subject item in Klapp-Online.

To perform a single character wildcard search use the ? symbol.
For example, to search for "woman" or "women" you can use the search:
wom?n
To perform a multiple character, 0 or more, wildcard search use the * symbol.
For example, to search for test, tests or tester, you can use the search:
test*
You can also use the wildcard searches in the middle of a term.
te*t
Note: You cannot use a * or ? symbol as the first character of a search.
Use the tilde ~ symbol at the end of a Single word Term. For example, to search for variant spellings of "Tchaikovsky," use the fuzzy search:
Tchaikovsky~
An additional parameter can specify the required similarity. The value is between 0 and 1, with a value closer to 1 only terms with a higher similarity will be matched. For example:
Tchaikovsky~0.8
The default that is used if the parameter is not given is 0.5.
Use the tilde ~ symbol at the end of a Multiple word Term. For example, to search for féminisme and Beauvoir that are within 10 words apart:
"féminisme Beauvoir"~10
To perform a range search you can use the { } characters. For example to search for a term that starts with either A, B, or C:
{A TO C}
The same can be done with numeric fields such as the Year:
[2002 TO 2003]
Boolean operators allow terms to be combined with logic operators. The following operators are allowed: AND, +, OR, NOT and -.
Note: Boolean operators must be ALL CAPS
- AND
-
The AND operator is the default conjunction operator. This means that if there is no Boolean operator between two terms, the AND operator is used. The AND operator matches records where both terms exist anywhere in the field of a record.
To search for records that contain "féminisme" and "Beauvoir" use the query:
féminisme Beauvoir
or
féminisme AND Beauvoir
- +
-
The "+" or required operator requires that the term after the "+" symbol exist somewhere in the field of a record.
To search for records that must contain "féminisme" and may contain "Beauvoir" use the query:
+féminisme Beauvoir
- OR
-
The OR operator links two terms and finds a matching record if either of the terms exist in a record.
To search for documents that contain either "féminisme Beauvoir" or just "Beauvoir" use the query:
"féminisme Beauvoir" OR Beauvoir
- NOT
-
The NOT operator excludes records that contain the term after NOT.
To search for documents that contain "féminisme" but not "Beauvoir" use the query:
féminisme NOT Beauvoir
Note: The NOT operator cannot be used with just one term. For example, the following search will return no results:
NOT féminisme
- -
-
The - or prohibit operator excludes documents that contain the term after the "-" symbol.
To search for documents that contain "féminisme" but not "Beauvoir" use the query:
féminisme -Beauvoir
